Movie Review: Crazy Little Thing Called Love

It’s been two years since the first time I watched the movie “A little Thing Called Love” via YouTube. In June 2011, TV network giant ABS-CBN gained the exclusive right to air the Tagalog-sub movie on Philippine national television. For this year, it's been airing over and over again.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love (a.k.a. First Love)” is a 2010 romantic comedy hit Thai movie directed by Puttipong Pormsaka Na-Sakonnakorn and Wasin Pokpong. A story of finding first love in the eyes of young people, it immediately captured the hearts of many Asian movie fanatics including Filipino teenagers.

The film stars Baifern Pimchanok as Nam, a typical high school girl who is secretly in love to her senior and school heartthrob Shone, portrayed by Thai model/actor Mario Maurer.

Being an ugly duckling in the campus, Nam tries her best to get the attention of Shone by changing every aspect of her physical look – from scrubbing her dark skin to removing her braces and eye glasses. As years passed by, she managed to transform herself into a beautiful young lady that every man would admire. But is that enough to win the heart of the person whom she considers as her first and true love?

Though the plot is a common story of young people falling in love with the ugly-duckling-turned-into-swan theme, it is something that everyone can easily relate to. The trailer was right in its claim that it is based on "the story of everyone." Most of us share the same experience of having a crush with the most popular guy in the campus and doing crazy things just to get a smile or glance from him. There are also those moments of frustrations that he won’t like you back.

The character of Nam tells us how love can change us in a positive way (in her case that is changing herself physically and emotionally for the better). Shone, on the other hand, is an image of a true friend who is willing to sacrifice his own happiness for his bestfriend.

Though some parts are predictable, the mixture of romance, drama and comedy makes it an entertaining movie to watch (thanks to Nam’s quirky friends and homeroom professor). Nam and Shone also made a good chemistry, as they really look good together on screen.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love will surely relieve the memories one’s first crush and even FIRST LOVE.
