Movie Review: The Reunion

PAYING HOMAGE to the iconic music of the country’s legendary rock band Eraserheads on the big screen, Star Cinema comes with a barkada drama-comedy film “The Reunion” starring Kapamilya actors, Xian Lim, Enchong Dee, Enrique Gil and Kean Cipriano.

Directed by Frasco Mortiz, the story follows the adventures and misadventures of four friends, Lloyd (Enchong), Boggs (Enrique), Pat (Kean), and Joax (Xian) in search for the “second chance” in their troubled lives since they graduated from high school.
The plot unfolds when the barkada decided to meet once again and attend their high school reunion. During the party, they were hit hard by the fact that their rivals have become successful in their own careers while they ended up on dead-end jobs.

Thinking that their misfortune was the result of messing up with their respective high school girlfriends seven years ago, the four came up with a plan of reconciling Mia (Christine Reyes) and Lloyd, in hopes that it will finally fix their lives.

Llyod’s search for Ara has become the centerpiece of the story whereas the individual stories of Boggs, Pat, and Joax have become like fillers along the way. The resolution of the plot does not materialize well in terms of their goal for professional growth but rather focused on a more personal aspect of their life – love.

As a tribute movie to Eraserheads, the film does not fail the audience who want to hear the band’s hit songs such as “Ang Huling el Bimbo” and “Alapaap”.

Despite its typical barkdahan plot, the chemistry of the four men including their ex-girflfriends Toyang (Megan Young), Ligaya (Julia Montes), and Shirley (Bangs Garcia), gives the film its youthful feel. The airport chase and wedding scene in the end is also a cliché but the comedic atmosphere of the film salvages it.

As the title suggests, The Reunion has successfully reunited E-heads fans with their music once again – not on concert stage but on the big screen.
